December 17, 2025 [Global-eFuels]- Metafuels, the Swiss aviation technology company, has awarded McDermott a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract for its Turbe project, Europe’s first commercial synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) facility at the Evos terminal in the Port of Rotterdam.
The Turbe plant will deploy Metafuels’ proprietary methanol-to-jet technology, aerobrew, producing drop-in e-SAF compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure. The FEED phase, which precedes the final investment decision (FID), includes basic engineering, technical specification optimization, and cost estimation.
This project marks a key step in scaling Metafuels’ technology from demonstration to industrial deployment. Earlier in 2025, Metafuels successfully installed its 50 liters-per-day methanol-to-jet demonstration plant at Switzerland’s Paul Scherrer Institute and expanded its European presence through Metafuels Nederland B.V.
Turbe is designed for high efficiency and cost leadership, converting e-methanol to e-SAF at yields that reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 90 percent compared to conventional kerosene. The facility will serve as a blueprint for large-scale e-SAF production, aligned with EU mandates including ReFuelEU Aviation and CORSIA, supporting Europe’s aviation decarbonization targets through 2030 and beyond.
