Malaysia’s Bintulu LNG Plant to Get First Supplies from Jerun Gas Field
07.12.2024 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

July 12, 2024 [LNG Prime]- Malaysia’s giant Bintulu LNG plant, operated by Petronas, will soon receive its first gas supplies from the Jerun field, according to LNG giant Shell.

Shell has a 30 percent equity stake in the field, through its Malaysian subsidiary, Sarawak Shell.

SapuraOMV Upstream ,which is being acquired by France’s TotalEnrgies, has a 40 percent operating stake in the field and Petronas holds 30 percent.

The partners made a final investment decision on the development in 2021 and announced first gas this week.

The field is located around 160 kilometres (km) north-west of Bintulu in Sarawak, and 190 km north-west of Miri, Sarawak.

Comprising an integrated central processing platform, Jerun will export gas through a new 80-km pipeline into the E11RB production hub, for onward delivery to Bintulu based customers including Malaysia LNG, Shell said in a statement on Friday.

The Jerun platform is designed to produce up to 550 million cubic feet of gas per day, with condensate production of 15,000 barrels per day during peak production.

“Jerun was a highly attractive investment for Shell, building on our interests in this important region off the coast of Sarawak, offshore Malaysia, where Shell operates the Timi platform and has the Rosmari-Marjoram project under construction,” said Zoe Yujnovich, Shell’s integrated gas and upstream director.

Bintulu LNG

The Bintulu plant, which has shipped more than 12,000 LNG cargoes since it started operations back in 1983, consists of nine trains and supplies key demand centers such as Japan, South Korea, China, and Taiwan.

The 30 mtpa LNG complex includes MLNG Satu, MLNG Dua, MLNG Tiga, and the Train 9 which started commercial operations in 2017.

During 2023, Petronas delivered 403 LNG cargoes from the facility, down by two cargoes compared to 2022.

In the January-March period this year, Petronas delivered 112 LNG cargoes from the facility.

This is up by three cargoes compared to 109 shipments in the first quarter of 2023.
