February 07, 2025 [Renewables Now]- A group of energy and technology companies have teamed up on the HyLion network project in Scotland that aims to build a transnational, European end-to-end supply chain for CO2-reduced hydrogen produced from renewable energies which will be converted into e-methanol.
The project was introduced this week by MHP, a management and IT consultancy and a Porsche company. The partners include ARUP, McPhy Energy S.A.S, Bosch Manufacturing Solutions GmbH, E. ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions, CO2 Recovery Ltd & The Carbon Removers, Mareneco Ltd, and P1 Fuels, as well as shipping company Cadeler (OSL:CADLR) among the off-takers.
The first phase of the project will target the production of more than 9,000 metric tonnes of hydrogen and around 45,000 metric tonnes of e-methanol per year, MHP said in a press statement. The company, which is providing strategic and operational advice on the development and digitalisation of an efficient supply chain, estimates that the initiative could scale significantly with regard to the available resources.
With a “Green Investment Portfolio” status by Scottish Development International, the project is expected to become operational at the beginning of 2028. Its output will be used in the UK and Europe in general, including Germany, servicing customers in the automotive industry, international and national racing series, and light aircraft, for example.
In the pilot phase, the plan is to use 63,000 metric tonnes of biogenic CO2 per year for the production of e-methanol. This CO2 will be sourced from biomass on the one hand and from the whisky industry on the other.
The location of the project will be centred around E. ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions’ biomass power plant in Lockerbie, which will provide some of the biogenic CO2 needed for the e-methanol production. The remaining needs will be covered by the whisky production process with the assistance of Carbon Removers and CO2 Recovery.
The hydrogen production technology has been assigned to McPhy, which will supply 80 MW of electrolyser capacity, while Bosch Manufacturing Solutions will be in charge of the water treatment and, if necessary, desalination.
P1 Fuels will supply technology for e-methanol conversion into an e-fuel. Mareneco will supply, handle and transport the e-methanol to the marine industry, for example to the ports of Cairnryan and Grangemouth. ARUP, in turn, will lead the pre-project planning.
