Magellan No Longer Considering Bay Area for Oil Tank Farm

October 29, 2018 [Community Impact Newspaper] - The oil storage company that proposed the Bay Area as a site for 58 oil tanks is no longer considering the area.

Magellan Midstream Partners riled residents and politicians alike this summer when it expressed interest in building 58 oil tanks near the intersection of Clear Lake City Boulevard and Hwy. 3, just south of an Ellington Airport landing strip.

After pushback, Magellan withdrew its consideration in a letter sent to Houston officials, including Dave Martin, Houston City Council District E member. The company is now considering land near the Port of Houston, Martin said.

The good news is we stopped them,” Martin said at a town hall meeting last week. The bad news is officials must now find a better use for the land so another bad development does not take Magellan’s place, Martin said.

Politicians and residents opposed the tanks over concerns they would be in the flight path of the airstrip, leak oil, cause flooding and be an eyesore for an area known as a hub for technology such as space travel.

“I am vehemently opposed to this proposal as public safety is extremely important to me. I will not support any development that would jeopardize the quality of life or negatively impact the economy,” Martin told Community Impact Newspaper last month.
