Local Council Approves Meld’s £250m Green Hydrogen Hub in the Humber

June 13, 2024 [H2 View]- Meld Energy has received the green light for its 100MW green hydrogen production facility at Saltend Chemicals Park in Hull, UK.

The Meld Energy Green Hydrogen Hub is expected to bring more than £180m ($230m) of investment to Humber Freeport, with work set to begin in 2026 ahead of full operations in 2028.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council approved the £250m ($319m) initiative, which will replace the use of grey hydrogen and fossil fuels at the facility and is anticipated to produce 13,400 tonnes of hydrogen per year, using the region’s abundant onshore and offshore renewable power.

Owned by px Group, the Saltend Chemicals Park houses top-tier businesses such as bp Petrochemicals Technology, Vivergo Fuels, Yara, Mitsubishi Chemicals UK, Ineos and Air Products, along with the Triton Power Station. Meld’s project could meet 30% of the park’s hydrogen demands.

The American-backed British start-up submitted bids to round two of the government’s Hydrogen Production Business Model in April (2024) and is now awaiting an announcement later this year. The government wants to support up to 875MW of hydrogen production in total.

“Meld Energy’s ambitious plans for the Humber are poised to accelerate decarbonisation efforts in the region,” explained Meld Energy’s CEO, Chris Smith. “The outline planning approval is an important milestone for the development of our project which is the first of several that we will be bringing forward in the Humber and across the UK.”

H2 View understands the Humber region is the largest industrial emitter of CO2 in the UK, with over 5% of overall emissions and 50% more than the next largest region.

Smith added, “Our Saltend Chemicals Park project will enable decarbonisation for our customers on the park and sets the baseline for accelerating and reducing the cost of the energy transition.”
