December 10, 2024 [VTTI]- VTTI is pleased to announce an open season for Project Amplifhy, VTTI’s initiative to develop a European network of ammonia import terminals and ammonia crackers. The open season is to gauge interest and work towards capacity reservation and allocation for ammonia storage and ammonia cracking at VTTI’s terminals in Rotterdam and Antwerp.
VTTI’s offering of ammonia import and cracking facilities underscores its commitment to supporting sustainable energy solutions at two of Europe’s most critical energy hubs.
In line with the EU Gas Regulation and EU Gas Directive, the open season provides for a non-discriminatory and transparent process. Interested parties have until February 28, 2025, to participate in the process by submitting a non-binding expression of interest.
Project Amplifhy has received the status of Project of Common Interest from the European Commission in both Rotterdam and Antwerp, with Amplifhy Rotterdam granted EUR 11.6 million of EU co-funding through CB-RES. For Antwerp, we have applied for co-funding for the study phase under CEF-Energy. This makes VTTI the only ammonia terminal and cracker developer with advanced projects in both key industrial hubs, while other locations are also being actively pursued.
The open season supports the growth of Europe’s hydrogen market by aligning infrastructure with market needs. With Project Amplifhy, VTTI is pleased to support the development of the EU hydrogen economy, contribute to the targets in the Renewable Energy Directive and support the EU strategies RePowerEU and Fitfor55.
The open season is one of the steps in the development of the project. Next to the open season, VTTI is preparing to have further discussions with key stakeholders of the project and a formal participatory process for those stakeholders will follow in the course of 2025.
A Vision for the Future
Guy Moeyens, CEO of VTTI, stated:
“Hydrogen is central to the energy transition, and the strategic location of our terminals in Rotterdam and Antwerp give us unparalleled potential to lead in this space. With the launch of this Open Season, we are taking a bold step towards creating a hydrogen hub that will drive Europe’s decarbonization goals and empower a sustainable energy future.”
