November 20, 2024 [Pipeline&Gas Journal]- Kazakhstan’s Taldykorgan-Usharal gas pipeline, launched under the directive of the Head of State, aims to secure a consistent gas supply in a region where gasification currently stands below 50%.
The new pipeline will span 302.4 kilometers (187.9 miles) and include six branch pipelines and automatic gas distribution stations. With a throughput capacity of 385 million cubic meters of gas per year, the Taldykorgan-Usharal pipeline is set to integrate with the existing Almaty-Taldykorgan pipeline system. Completion of the project and its subsequent launch are expected by the end of 2026.
The pipeline will deliver natural gas to 66 settlements in the Aksu, Sarkan, and Alakol districts, serving 124,000 residents. Once operational, gasification in the region will rise from 47.6% to 90%.
Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov said that the project will enhance regional energy security, ensuring a stable gas supply to homes, social facilities, and industrial enterprises.
“This [pipeline] will contribute to the sustainable development of the region and improve the quality of life,” he said. “An additional positive effect will be the growth of business activity, development of small and medium-sized businesses with the creation of new jobs.”
In the broader Zhetisu region, 192 out of 358 settlements are scheduled for gasification. Currently, 37 settlements have been gasified, providing access to gas for 334,000 people, or 47.6% of the population. By the end of 2023, the nationwide gasification level is projected to reach 60%, benefiting around 12 million people.
“The Government attaches special importance to the implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects initiated by the Head of State,” Bektenov said.
He also noted the involvement of various funding sources, including Samruk-Kazyna and Baiterek holdings, foreign investment, and private capital. Samruk-Kazyna has allocated KZT 10.4 billion ($21.8 million) for 42 gasification projects, which will connect 30 more settlements in the Zhetisu region by year-end.
Bektenov also stressed the importance of maximizing the use of Kazakhstani goods and services in these projects, ensuring quality and timely delivery. He instructed the Ministry of Energy, National Company “QazaqGaz,” and the Akimat of the region to oversee the successful implementation of these projects, including strengthening control over the connection of gas to private homes.
