January 31, 2025 [SAF Investor]- Japan’s J-Oil Mills announced that it has successfully produced 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using oil extracted from the seeds of Calophyllum and Pongamia.
The two plant species are inedible subtropical plants.
The company said that the project, part of the Japanese national research and development agency’s project called “Demonstration Study for the Construction and Expansion of an SAF Supply Chain Model Using Vegetable Oils That Do Not Compete with Food”, produced neat SAF which complies with the international quality standard “ASTM D7566 Annex A2.”
The successful trials will pave the way for expanding raw materials for SAF production.
Calophyllum indica has a high oil content of 40% to 50% in its ovules, while Pongamia has a high oil content of 30% to 40%, and they can be cultivated in land that is not suitable for farming, such as dry areas or land with high salinity.
The company said that going forward, it plans to ensure quality of the SAF produced from the two plants and register it as a CORSIA eligible fuel.
“We will also work to expand the supply of raw material through cultivation verification tests and other initiatives, while promoting collaboration with oil refineries and other entities that have SAF technology,” said the company in a statement.
Earlier in October 2024, the company announced it had successfully produced oil containing SAF components from the seeds of the non-edible plant Calophyllum indicum. At the time, the company said it will collaborate with organisations that have SAF technology to ensure that the produced SAF meets international quality standards and is eligible for environmental certifications.
