Italy Approves New LNG terminal
10.28.2022 By Ella Keskin - NEWS

October 28, 2022 [Tank Store Mag] – A state-appointed commissioner formally approved the setting up of a new liquified natural gas (LNG) terminal in the Italian port of Piombino.

Preparatory works will be undertaken by SRG.MI and the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) will be part of a broader plan designed by the former government of Mario Draghi to replace decreasing Russian gas supplies.

Rome announced that the terminal needs to be operational by March 2023.

The port authority said that tankers transporting LNG should enter the port of Piombino during the night. The FSRU will also need to be monitored 24 hours a day to prevent potential attacks, according to the port authority.

The harbour will have to be dredged to create space for ships to manoeuvre, and the National Health Institute has asked for strict monitoring of any potential air pollution.
