Iran Says Lavan Refinery Attacked Despite Resistfire

April 08, 2026 [Argus Media]- Iran’s state-owned refiner NIORDC said a 55,000 b/d refinery on Lavan Island, south of the Iranian mainland, was attacked on Wednesday, hours after the US and Iran announced a two-week ceasefire aimed at finalizing a peace deal.

“At around 10am [local time] on Wednesday, the Lavan oil refinery facility located on Lavan Island was subjected to a cowardly attack by enemies,” NIORDC said.

First responders were working to bring the resulting fire under control and secure the facility, the company said. There were no casualties from the strike.

Neither Israel nor the US has formally commented on the incident. The attack occurred several hours after Washington and Tehran said they would halt hostilities for two weeks to allow talks to proceed.

Elsewhere in the region, Kuwait and the UAE both reported Iranian projectiles in their airspace on Wednesday, also after the ceasefire was announced.

Kuwait’s armed forces said it dealt with 28 Iranian drones between 08:00 and 13:00 local time. Some were targeting “vital oil installations and power stations in the south”, according to the military. The UAE said its air defense systems were “dealing with a missile threat” around 13:30 local time.

US president Donald Trump said he would delay planned attacks against Iran’s civilian and energy sites by two weeks if Iran agreed to allow free transit through the strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s supreme national security council confirmed the ceasefire, but said the peace proposal under discussion includes “continued Iranian control over the strait”.

Pakistan, which acted as the main mediator in the leading talks to the ceasefire, will host negotiations between Iran and the US in Islamabad later this week, prime minister Shehbaz Sharif said.
