IMTT Bought its First Tank Farm in 1939. Now the Terminal is Getting $1 Million Upgrade.

February 02, 2024 [Nola]- International-Matex Tank Terminals, the largest independent bulk liquids storage and logistics provider in North America, is spending close to $1 million upgrading its very first terminal, the Avondale tank farm that company founder James Coleman Sr. purchased in 1939.

Work is starting this week, with completion expected by mid-April. The contractor is the PALA Group, an industrial construction company headquartered in Baton Rouge, according to public records.

New Orleans-based IMTT operates 11 bulk liquid storage terminals in the United States and Canada. Its 88-tank Avondale tank farm is at 5450 River Road, near Avondale Global Gateway, and has a capacity of 1.1 million barrels.

The work there, estimated to cost $943,000, will extend a walkway and pipe rack for access to four loading locations for rail cars, according to Jefferson Parish building permit records. It will “provide additional loading flexibility to one of our existing vegetable oil customers,” said Carlin Conner, IMTT’s chairman and CEO.

“Being that the modifications are centralized at our existing rail facilities, located well within IMTT Avondale’s fence line, IMTT does not foresee any impact to the neighboring community or businesses,” Conner said.

In the past four years, IMTT says it has spent more than $400 million in south Louisiana to ease away from reliance on petroleum products storage and toward “renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel feedstocks and finished products, and methanol which is fast becoming a low-carbon alternative marine bunker fuel and other agricultural products. In 2023, over 50% of the company’s overall revenue came from handling non-petroleum products.”

In the past 18 months, it sold five terminals, in Alabama, Georgia and New Mexico, to a suburban Denver company that stores and transports jet fuel, and a sixth, in Gretna, to a Houston company.
