February 07, 2025 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- A major step toward the UK’s green energy transition is underway with the development of a new liquid bulk import terminal and processing facility, designed to support green hydrogen production. The facility will process imported ammonia, converting it into green hydrogen for distribution to filling stations across the UK
Key Infrastructure Developments
The project will include essential infrastructure such as:
A new approach trestle and jetty superstructure.
Topside infrastructure to facilitate ammonia import and handling.
Land-based processing facilities to convert ammonia into green hydrogen
These components will enable the seamless import, storage, and processing of ammonia, providing a crucial link in the UK’s hydrogen supply chain.
Planning and Examination Process
The application for the project was submitted by Associated British Ports to the Planning Inspectorate on 21 September 2023 and was accepted for examination on 19 October 2023. The proposal then underwent a rigorous examination process, allowing the public, statutory consultees, and other interested parties to provide input.
Following this six-month examination, the Examining Authority submitted its recommendations to the secretary of state for transport on 6 November 2024. This marks the 54th transport-related application out of 148 examined under the Planning Act 2008, with the process completed within statutory timescales.
Community Engagement and Decision Transparency
Local communities were actively involved in the examination, ensuring that their perspectives were considered in the decision-making process. The Examining Authority carefully reviewed all evidence and public input before presenting its recommendation to the Secretary of State.
The final decision, along with the Examining Authority’s recommendations and the evidence reviewed, is publicly accessible on the National Infrastructure Planning website. This transparency ensures that all stakeholders can stay informed about the project’s progress and its impact on the UK’s sustainable energy future.
With this ambitious initiative, the UK moves closer to establishing a robust hydrogen infrastructure, supporting decarbonisation efforts and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
