If Approved, Company Would Add A Sixth Fuel Storage Tank In South Bibb

October 19, 2017 [Macon] - An Oklahoma-based company that owns a fuel storage and transfer terminal in south Bibb County plans to add another storage tank at the site.

The company, Magellan Terminal Holdings LP, has filed with the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission applications to rezone the property, for a conditional-use permit and for a variance. The applications are on the agenda for Monday’s meeting.

Plans are to rezone 7.37 acres at 2505 Allen Road from a wholesale and light industrial district to a heavy industrial district to bring the property into alignment with zoning on neighboring property. Also, it would allow for the construction of an additional 100,000-barrel storage tank that is 100 feet in diameter and 60 feet high. The capacity is equal to 4.2 million gallons of fuel.

The site under consideration has been used as a fuel storage and transfer terminal since 1959, according to the commission’s staff report. The current owners acquired the property in 2004. There are five tanks existing on the site as well as a one-story office building and a loading facility.

The last rezoning to take place in the vicinity of this site was in August 1997, and it was to convert nearly 65 acres from agricultural and light manufacturing to manufactured home residential to allow for the development of a mobile home subdivision, the staff report said. This property is to the north of the fuel storage terminal.

According to the applicant, the proposed additional tank on the property will result in 19 additional gross tanker trucks per day on Allen Road. But some of those trucks will be a reallocation of existing trips to or from other facilities in the Bibb County area.

“The proposed rezoning is consistent with the 2040 Future Land Use plan,” the staff report said. “Heavy industrial proposed at this site is consistent with the continuation of existing activities at that location and the activities on immediate adjoining parcels.”
