November 19, 2024 [H2 View]- Norwegian PEM electrolyser firm has launched its 1.5MW HyPilot green hydrogen field project at the Karsto Gas Processing Plant in Rogaland.

The joint effort between Equinor, Yara Clean Ammonia, Gassco and ABB, will provide Hystar with performance data from its containerised PEM electrolyser unit, as it looks to scale up commercial deployments.

Set to run for 10,000 hours, the electrolyser manufacturer hopes the project will give it inside into developing green ammonia for fertiliser, shipping fuel and power production.

“HyPilot marks an important juncture for both Hystar and for the global green hydrogen industry,” said Hystar CEO, Fredrik Mowill.

“The project allows us to showcase our patented, ultra-efficient electrolysers and the exceptional benefits of our unique design and scalable technology can bring to the industry.”

Hystar has regularly said its electrolysers are the “most efficient in the world,” using a design with membranes 90% thinner than conventional electrolysers.

Commenting on the launch of the project, Yara Clean Ammonia CEO, Hans Olav Raen, said, “We perceive this PEM technology as promising and exciting, especially regarding the improved energy efficiency.”

The launch of the project comes shortly after the firm secured €26m from an EU Innovation Fund grant to support its scale-up of manufacturing at its gigafactory in Hovik.

Set to open with 1.5GW of capacity when it opens in 2027, Hystar intends to scale the facility to 4.5GW in 2031.
