Hynfra Signs Framework for USD-1.5bn Green Ammonia Plant in Mauritania

September 10, 2025 [Renewables Now]- Hynfra PSA has sealed a framework agreement with the government of Mauritania for the development of a USD-1.5-billion (EUR 1.27bn) green ammonia project with dedicated solar and wind power generating assets.

The planned complex will be built in the southern zone of the Somelec wind farm near the capital Nouakchott and will have the capacity to supply 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually from 2030 onwards. In addition to the main facility for green ammonia production, the investment covers solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind projects, electrolyser installations, and supporting infrastructure, such as water desalination plants, energy storage, and an export port.

Under the terms of the newly signed deal, the developer will conduct feasibility studies in 2025-2026 to define the detailed parameters of the investment, and then proceed with the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase in 2027-2028.

“Mauritania, thanks to the combination of high solar irradiation and strong, stable winds, has some of the best conditions in the world for the development of renewable energy. Combined with a century of Polish experience in ammonia synthesis, this creates a unique opportunity to build a project of global significance. All this is possible thanks to the vision of the Mauritanian government and its Hydrogen Code, which is among the most advanced in the world,” said Tomoho Umeda, General Director of MGA and President of Hynfra.

The green ammonia produced by the proposed plant will meet local industrial and community needs. A portion will also be exported to Europe via the country’s largest port, namely Port de l’Amitie in Nouakchott.
