April 28, 2025 [H2 View]- Hong Kong has issued preliminary approvals for eight hydrogen vehicle and power trial projects to inform future decision-making.
The Environment and Ecology Bureau (EEB) said its hydrogen fuel working group had given the eight projects agreements-in-principle, taking its total hydrogen energy trial project applications to 26.
Two projects will look to deploy hydrogen trucks for “cross-boundary” transports, three are looking at hydrogen fuel cell coaches for passenger services, while the remaining three will use hydrogen to support electric vehicle charging.
In addition to other approved projects, the EEB working group will use project operational data and experience to provide advice for safety and technical guideline improvements.
It comes after the Hong Kong government last year set out an action timeline focused on regulatory frameworks, standards, supporting infrastructure, regional cooperation and capacity building.
An EEB spokesperson said, “The working group will continue to regularly review the progress of the strategy and provide recommendations to facilitate the implementation of its various measures.”
Part of that strategy was looking to bridge the gap between China and the rest of the world on hydrogen technology.
The Chinese special administrative region also earmarked funding for a new subsidy scheme to trial heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
