September 23, 2023 [Bunkerspot]- A delegation from the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) has met with Shell officials to discuss green hydrogen projects as well as the possibility to establish LNG bunkering operations in Egyptian ports.

Headed by SCZONE Chairman, Waleid Gamal El-Dien, the delegation met with Shell’s Roberto Maria Pattumelli, Regional lead of the Hydrogen industry EU, and Rene Smeets, Marine LNG business development Manager.

‘The meeting discussed green hydrogen projects and SCZONE’s plans regarding this sector, as SCZONE has signed nine framework agreements with major global consortia for green fuel production and bunkering services,’ SCZONE said in a statement yesterday (21 September).

‘This comes after the success of the bunkering operation for the first vessel powered by green methanol at East Port Said Port. The two sides discussed the requirements of green hydrogen projects in Sokhna integrated zone; the desalination plants, the green corridor, and the tank farms for liquid bulk, to serve green hydrogen production, transportation, and storage.’

During the meeting, Shell officials showcased its LNG bunkering services and the possibility to establish operations in Egypt through SCZONE-affiliated ports.

As previously reported, the first bunkering operation at the Port of Sokhna was completed in July. The fuelling was undertaken by the Minerva barge Karpathos, which delivered 950 tonnes of fuel to the CMA CGM Suez containership. Commenting after the milestone bunkering, Gamal El-Dien highlighted Egypt’s strategy for the ‘transformation into a regional and leading ships’ bunkering hub.’
