Flint Hills Resources to Begin Construction On $20M Fuel Terminal Expansion

August 26, 2016 [Flint Hills Resouces] - Flint Hills Resources announced today plans to begin construction on a $20 million expansion of its Waupun, Wisconsin fuel terminal. The project will help meet demand for transportation fuels in the central and northeastern parts of the state, including the Fox River Valley and Green Bay markets.

The company is also nearing completion of an estimated $7 million expansion of its Junction City fuel terminal. lint Hills Resources currently supplies approximately 1/3 of the gasoline and diesel fuel used in Wisconsin.

The expansion and improvement projects at Flint Hills Resources’ Waupun and Junction City fuel terminals involve more than doubling the loading capacity of the current 2-bay Waupun terminal with the addition of three new bays, and adding a fifth loading bay to Junction City.

Together, the projects will give Flint Hills Resources the capability to supply at least an additional 27,000 barrels per day (1.1 million gallons per day) of product volume to central and northeastern Wisconsin markets.

“The additional truck loading bays and other operational improvements will give us the ability to supply our customers with more of the transportation fuels that help power Wisconsin,” said Brian Leigh, general manager of marketing for Flint Hills Resources in Wisconsin. “We expect these projects will help us keep up with demand and improve our ability to serve our customers.”

Construction on the Junction City project is currently underway with completion expected this fall. The Waupun project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2017. The terminals will remain in operation during construction.

This is Flint Hills Resources’ largest investment in its Wisconsin system since it upgraded its Milwaukee fuel terminal in 2005. Combined, the projects will create up to about 57,000 hours of new craft labor work. The company operates a fourth fuel terminal in McFarland, near Madison, and asphalt terminals in Stevens Point and Green Bay as well as fuels and asphalt terminals in Minnesota.

The terminals are supplied by the Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend refinery near Saint Paul. Product is delivered to the fuels terminals by pipeline via the Wisconsin Pipeline system.
