ExxonMobil Enters Cloud Technology Partnership to Raise Production
02.25.2019 - NEWS

February 25, 2019 [Oil & Gas Journal] - ExxonMobil Corp. said a partnership with Microsoft to use cloud technology for the supermajor’s Permian basin operations is expected to increase net cash flow over the next decade through improved analysis and enhanced operational efficiencies.

The application of Microsoft technologies by ExxonMobil’s XTO Energy Inc. subsidiary is anticipated to support Permian production growth by as much as 50,000 boe/d by 2025, ExxonMobil said.

Staale Gjervik, XTO senior vice-president, Permian integrated development, said, “The unconventional business is fast-moving, complex, and data-rich, which makes it well suited for the application of digital technologies to strengthen our operations and help deliver greater value.”

ExxonMobil’s partnership with Microsoft includes an integrated cloud that collects real-time data from field assets across hundreds of miles. The data will enable ExxonMobil to make faster decisions on drilling optimization, well completions, and personnel assignments.

Leak detection and repair times could be reduced with enhanced access to emissions data, strengthening XTO’s voluntary actions to manage methane emissions.

ExxonMobil estimates its Permian acreage covers a 9.5 billion boe resource and more than 1.6 million acres, representing industry’s largest acreage position using cloud technology.

“Digital technology is a fundamental enabler for our Permian development,” Gjervik said. “Through our partnership with Microsoft, we’re combining our technical and engineering expertise with cloud and data analytics capabilities to develop the Permian resource in the most capital-efficient manner.”
