Evos, Hydrogenious And Port Of Amsterdam’s Large-Scale Hydrogen Import Facility

October 26, 2022 [Tank Store Mag] – Evos, Hydrogenious and Port of Amsterdam have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop large-scale hydrogen import facilities at the European port.

 

The project will comprise a liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) dehydrogenation plant with a final release capacity of up to 100-500 tonnes of hydrogen per day, along with related storage and handling facilities, with volumes of up to 1m tonnes a year. Delivery to off-takers is scheduled from 2028.

A completed feasibility study found that LOHC technology is “a compelling solution”, compatible with existing infrastructure.

The liquid organic hydrogen carrier used by Hydrogenious, thermal oil benzyl toluene (LOHC-BT), is well established in the industry as a heat transfer medium and has ideal properties for safe handling in ports. After dehydrogenation, it can be reused many hundreds of times to bind hydrogen.

All three parties are founding members of the H2A platform, which focuses on the development of supply chains for green hydrogen imports through the Port of Amsterdam.

Koen Overtoom, CEO Port of Amsterdam, said its location and proximity to the wider North Sea Canal Area make it ideally suited for such a terminal and plant.

He said: “This region also offers large potential for offtake with our connection to Schiphol Airport and the presence of large industrial clusters.”

Additionally, it collaborates with Duisburger Hafen (duisport) to facilitate the distribution of hydrogen to the German and European hinterland.

Dr Daniel Teichmann, founder and CEO of Hydrogenious LOHC, said in order to realise Europe’s ambitious plans to import 10MT of hydrogen by 2030, we need to make use of existing infrastructure.

He said: “Besides the development of import projects, H2A will also provide political and regulatory support to technology companies and project developers at the location, as well as structured access to funding.”

Ramon Ernst, managing director Evos Amsterdam, said it sees a promising future in LOHC technology and it operates two large tank terminals that are perfectly suited for the safe storage and handling of LOHC.

In July, a 500MW green hydrogen plant (Project H2era) was unveiled by Hydrogen Chemistry Company, with operations scheduled from 2027.
