ETFuels Picks Partners for USD-1bn-plus e-Methanol Plant in Texas

December 24, 2024 [Renewables Now]- ETFuels has selected Belgian mechanical engineering specialist John Cockerill and UK speciality chemicals and sustainable technologies company Johnson Matthey Plc as partners in its first project in the US, a new e-methanol plant in Texas with a targeted capacity of 120,000 tonnes per year.

The planned facility will span 22,000 acres and will feature a green hydrogen production system, 500 MW of co-located renewable energy sources, together with biogenic CO2. A final investment decision on the project, valued at more than USD 1 billion (EUR 960m), is anticipated in 2026 and the start of construction works is targeted for 2027 at the latest.

Under the agreed partnership, John Cockerill will provide 210 MW of its advanced pressurised alkaline electrolyser units, along with technical services as the foundation for the front-end engineering and design (FEED) phase for the green hydrogen facility.

Johnson Matthey, in turn, will supply its advanced eMERALD e-methanol technology, along with the eMERALD methanol synthesis catalyst. Its technology also forms the basis of the FEED phase for the fully integrated e-methanol facility.

The Texas site “will pave the way for the development of ETFuels’ broader portfolio of sites across Texas, Spain and Finland — some of the best locations in the world to produce e-fuels,” a press statement says.

ETFuels is an Irish green fuels producer founded in 2022. It is backed by French asset manager SWEN Capital Partners.

The company is currently also working on a 100,000-tonne green methanol plant in Castilla-la-mancha, Spain, which was awarded a EUR-15-million grant in January.
