Equinor and Linde Collaborate on Hydrogen Project Set to Support German-Dutch Pipeline Ambitions

January 9, 2024 [H2 View]- Equinor and Linde have signed an agreement on the H2M Eemshaven low carbon hydrogen project based in the Netherlands.

Under the agreement, the two companies will develop the project as partners, with Equinor securing access to carbon transport and storage capacity and offer low-carbon hydrogen to the market.

Linde will build, co-own and operate the hydrogen production and carbon capture and transfer facility in the Eemshaven industrial area. The facility will reform natural gas from the Norwegian continental shelf to low-carbon hydrogen with CO2 capture and storage (CCS).

Expected to start production in late 2028, the facility will see more than 95% of CO2 captured and safely stored under Norway’s seabed offshore. The hydrogen plant will then be connected to onshore hydrogen pipelines planned in both the Netherlands and Germany.

Grete Tveit, Senior Vice President for Low Carbon Solutions at Equinor, said, “The H2M Eemshaven project is part of our strategy to develop hydrogen production in three to five major industrial clusters in Europe by 2035.

“Together, we can produce low-carbon hydrogen to ensure reliable and clean energy to Europe. We look forward to developing this important project together with Linde.”

Linde’s President for the West Europe Region, Stefano Innocenzi, claimed the transition to a low-carbon economy is now gaining momentum with this project.

The two companies have previously collaborated, Equinor awarding a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract to Linde Engineering last year (2023), for its Hydrogen to Humber (H2H) Saltend project.
