Duisburg Port Joins Green Corridor Between Brazil, Netherlands

December 24, 2024 [Renewables Now]- The German Port of Duisburg on the Rhine River will be included in a green corridor between Brazil and the Netherlands to enable the potential deliveries of green hydrogen and other alternative fuels to Germany from Brazil, port operator Duisburger Hafen AG (Duisport) said.

Duisport signed a memorandum of understanding with the ports of Pecem in Ceara and Rotterdam to extend the corridor which is planned to connect Ceara with Rotterdam. The agreement focuses on the transport of alternative fuels such as e-methanol, green ammonia and other derivatives to support Europe’s decarbonisation and energy security goals.

The collaboration is also aimed at enhancing Brazil’s energy transition and the development of green energy projects in the South American country. The inclusion of Germany in the green corridor expands the European market for green hydrogen produced in Ceara.

“We recognise Brazil’s potential, particularly Ceara, as a potential supplier of green hydrogen, and we welcome the collaboration with Duisport to establish seamless supply chains for green hydrogen,” Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam, commented on the collaboration.

According to the statement, the Port of Rotterdam expects to import around 18 million tonnes of hydrogen and derivatives by 2050, with a significant portion arriving via sea vessels able to access the Rhine Delta Corridor. The corridor should be completed by 2031/2032 and will consist of a network of pipelines, shipping routes and infrastructure connecting Rotterdam with Germany’s industrial Ruhr region and the rest of the country.

“The Port of Duisburg serves as a central logistics hub in the heart of Europe and will make a significant contribution to the energy transition,” Duisport CEO Markus Bangen commented.

The current memorandum of understanding comes after the ports of Duisburg and Rotterdam decided in 2023 to strengthen their cooperation in the area of hydrogen transportation.
