DESFA Wins $181 Million EU Grant for Greece’s First CO₂ Transport Network

November 04, 2025 [Pipeline & Gas Journal]- DESFA has secured €169.3 million ($181 million) from the European Union’s Innovation Fund to advance APOLLOCO₂, Greece’s first large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) midstream infrastructure project.

The funding, awarded under the EU’s fifth Innovation Fund Large-Scale Projects Call, supports the development of a CO₂ transport and export network designed to link industrial emitters with storage sites in Greece and across the Mediterranean.

Developed in cooperation with ECOLOG, a member of the GASLOG Group, the APOLLOCO₂ project aims to create an open-access system that enables carbon capture from heavy industries and power producers. Recognized as a Project of Common Interest (PCI No. 13.11), it serves as the midstream component connecting CO₂ capture facilities with storage hubs such as the Prinos offshore site.

DESFA plans to build a CO₂ liquefaction, temporary storage, and export terminal on Revithoussa Island, converting the existing LNG regasification facility into a dual-purpose LNG and CO₂ terminal. The project will use the LNG terminal’s existing cooling energy to liquefy carbon dioxide, a feature that “significantly reduces power consumption and operating costs while allowing flexible, cost-efficient CO₂ shipping,” according to the company.

To link emitters with the liquefaction facility, DESFA is developing a 35-km (22-mile) CO₂ pipeline, which could transport about 3 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, expandable to 5 million tonnes annually by 2034. DESFA is seeking additional EU support for this segment through the Connecting Europe Facility.

“The selection of APOLLOCO₂ by the EU’s Innovation Fund marks a major step forward for Greece’s industrial decarbonization journey,” said Maria Rita Galli, CEO of DESFA. “This project lays the foundation for a scalable and cost-effective open access CCS value chain, helping industries cut emissions while maintaining competitiveness.”

The European Commission identified APOLLOCO₂ as one of the most innovative CCS transport projects in Europe.
