Denmark Earmarks Over EUR 2bn for Hydrogen Pipeline to Germany
02.13.2025 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

February 13, 2025 [Renewables Now]- Denmark will provide a loan of DKK 7.4 billion (USD 1.02bn/EUR 992m) and operating subsidies of up to DKK 8.3 billion to support the construction of a hydrogen pipeline from the Danish seaport city of Esbjerg to the German border, the Danish embassy in Berlin said on Monday.

The embassy confirmed a recent statement by the Danish government that the hydrogen export route should be operational by 2030, according to a new timeline.

The government decided to accelerate the pipeline’s construction after reaching an agreement with a broad coalition of local parties.

Following the political decision, the project developer, Danish grid operator Energinet, will submit in the spring of 2025 a formal application to the energy ministry to establish the hydrogen infrastructure.

While the project initially covers the construction of a pipeline to the German border, next phases include the development of a northern route to Lille Torup and an eastern route to Fredericia, both being key energy hubs in Denmark.

The 2030 timeline for the completion of the first section is tight. In November, Energinet said that the segment to Germany is expected to become operational by late 2031 as several key activities have proven more complex and time-consuming than initially assumed.

The Danish company is developing the project in collaboration with the German unit of Dutch gas grid operator Gasunie. Under the original plans, the companies aimed to establish a cross-border transmission connection to transport green hydrogen from Denmark to Germany starting in 2028.
