Coatzacoalcos Port Readying Fuel Storage Facility

September 18, 2017 [BN Americas] - Mexico's Coatzacoalcos port authority is preparing the launch of two projects for the complex in the Gulf state of Veracruz.

One of the initiatives entails the construction of a fuel storage facility, while the other involves a rail service to transport containers, the authority’s director Ovidio Nodal told local news site Imagen del Golfo.

An international public tender for construction of the storage facility is expected to be launched within the next few days, the report said. It would require an estimated 600mn pesos (US$33.8mn) and be used to store up to 1mn barrels of petroleum products.

The contract is due to be awarded as a 20-year concession to build and operate the facility, with the possibility of renewal for a similar term. Construction is expected to begin before year-end.

The rail service would transport containers between Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz port on the Pacific coast of neighboring Oaxaca state.

The service would initially transport around 100 containers a week, carrying products such as fertilizers, cement, salt and petrochemicals, the report said.

State-owned company Ferrocarril del Istmo de Tehuantepec has agreed to allow the service to operate on the route running from Medias Aguas, Veracruz to Salina Cruz, Nodal said.

As for the remaining stretch, from Medias Aguas to Coatzacoalcos, the port authority is still negotiating approval with Ferrosur, the route’s concession holder.
