December 1, 2023 [LNG Prime]- China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) is nearing the mechanical completion of six giant LNG storage tanks at its Binhai LNG import terminal in Jiangsu.

The state-owned energy giant is building the 270,000 cbm tanks under the Phase I expansion project of its “Yancheng Green Energy Port” and these are the world’s largest LNG storage tanks, such as those five at CNOOC’s Zhuhai LNG import terminal in Guangdong, according to CNOOC.

China’s state-controlled energy giant Sinopec recently put in use what it says is the world’s largest LNG storage tank at its Qingdao LNG import terminal in Shandong province and this tank also has a capacity of 275,000 cbm.

The six tanks at CNOOC’s LNG terminal located in Yancheng Binhai Port Industrial Park add to the already four existing tanks with a capacity of 220,000 cbm.

In September last year, CNOOC completed raising the roofs on all of the six 270,000 cbm LNG storage tanks and recently hydrotested one of the tanks.

CNOOC Gas & Power, a unit of CNOOC, said in a statement on Monday that the main construction of the six LNG storage tanks is essentially completed.

On November 20, CNOOC’s unit completed the installation of inner wall panels of all of the six tanks, it said.

CNOOC Gas & Power said it will now test the rest of the tanks ahead of their mechanical completion, but it did not provide and other details regarding the completion.

In August, CNOOC received the 30th cargo of liquefied natural gas at its Jiangsu-Binhai LNG import terminal since September last year.

The LNG terminal received its 15th cargo in May this year, while LNG producer Qatargas, a unit of QatarEnergy, delivered the first LNG cargo on September 26, 2022.

The terminal currently has a nominal capacity of three million tonnes of LNG per annum and can receive vessels with a capacity of between 80,000 cubic meters and 266,000 cubic meters.
