CB&I Secures AiP for Liquid Hydrogen Cargo Containment System
09.02.2023 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

September 1, 2023 [H2 View]- CB&I has received an Approval in Principle (AiP) for the design of a liquid hydrogen cargo containment system from DNV.

The McDermott storage business has collaborated with Shell International Trading and Shipping Company to provide safe liquid hydrogen shipping solutions to enable hydrogen energy supply chains.

The AiP will confirm that the containment system is aligned with applicable safety standards, such as class rules, the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code), along with others.

The containment system will be based on CB&I’s vacuum-insulated spherical technology for onshore liquid hydrogen storage, with a Hazard Identification (HAZID) risk assessment carried out as an integral part of the AiP process to ensure all hazards in the system were addressed.

The system was integrated into a Houlder concept vessel, which includes a hull optimised for the low-density cargo around three large tanks.

Cesar Canals, Senior Vice President of CB&I, said, “This approval is a major milestone in making this ground-breaking technology available to all companies looking to build liquid hydrogen carriers, and we look forward to the possibilities this brings to advancing the hydrogen energy supply chain.”

Technology Manager at Shell, Steve Brown, added, “This is an important milestone, resulting from a lot of hard work and a collaboration between companies working at the forefront of innovation in this sector.

“To support the role of liquid hydrogen in the energy transition it is critical that we demonstrate its potential as a viable energy carrier with urgency and achieving this AiP is a significant step in the right direction.”

Yesterday (August 29), DNV released a new service specification DNV-SE-0654 designed to validate low-carbon and renewable hydrogen and ammonia attribute claims.

DNV’s Director of Approval, Ship Classification, Ivar Håberg, commented on CB&I’s AiP, “Hydrogen, with its potential as an energy carrier and fuel, is likely to play a significant role in the energy transition. It is important for industries to confidently pursue new technologies while ensuring safety.”
