BP’s Senegal-Mauritania LNG Project Set for First Cargo Loading

February 25, 2025 [Oil Price]- First LNG cargo loading from the new gas project offshore Senegal and Mauritania in West Africa is expected within weeks, a junior partner of the project operator, supermajor BP, said on Monday.

The BP-led Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project achieved first LNG production earlier this year, its project partner Kosmos Energy said in its 2024 earnings release today.

“The first LNG cargo is expected later this quarter, with an LNG tanker currently standing by the Hub Terminal ready for loading,” Kosmos Energy added.

Loading the first cargo is when the partnership will start to recognize revenue from the project, the company noted.

Earlier this month, Kosmos Energy said that the GTA project had started delivering natural gas to the floating LNG vessel and liquefaction had begun.

On December 31, 2024, gas from the first phase of GTA started to flow from wells to the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel as part of the commissioning process.

BP has now given notice to the offtaker, BP Gas Marketing Ltd., for an LNG carrier to arrive later this quarter to export the first LNG cargo.

The start-up of the project will benefit the economies of West African countries Senegal and Mauritania. It will also add LNG supply to the market as soon as this quarter, at a time when Europe is depleting its gas storage reserves and rushing to secure gas for the next winter.

The GTA project has seen some delays in recent years as it was originally expected to come on stream in 2023.

The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim Phase 1 project will produce LNG from the massive natural gas discoveries offshore Mauritania and Senegal in West Africa made in 2015.

Phase 1 is set to produce around 2.3 million tons of LNG per year and the project is expected to produce LNG for more than 20 years, enabling Mauritania and Senegal to become a global LNG hub, BP says.
