BP Scraps 500-MW HyGreen Teesside Hydrogen Project in UK

March 10, 2025 [Renewables Now]- Oil and gas major BP Plc confirmed a decision to call off its large-scale HyGreen Teesside project in the North East of England, in line with its “fundamentally reset strategy” to sharpen focus on its core operations.

“As we set out in our strategy reset announcement last week, in hydrogen and carbon capture bp is focusing on high-graded projects, prioritising 5-7 projects for this decade. In the UK, our focus is on the significant projects in Teesside — NZT Power, NEP, and also H2Teesside (blue hydrogen). Therefore, we are no longer progressing our plans to develop HyGreen,” a spokesperson for the company said.

HyGreen was set to be developed in multiple stages, targeting an overall hydrogen production capacity of up to 500 MWe ‎by 2030.

In 2022, BP signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for UAE-based renewable energy company Masdar to take a stake in the project.

Prior to the news about the HyGreen project, uncertainty loomed over another BP project — the Kwinana Energy Hub. In February, the British firm said it had decided to revise its plans for clean fuel and hydrogen production at its former oil refinery in Western Australia.
