BP Opened Bitumen and Marine Fuel Import Facility in Queensland

December 15, 2011 [BP Australia] - The Honourable Craig Wallace, Minister for Main Roads, Fisheries and Marine Infrastructure, Queensland, today formally opened BP’s bitumen and marine fuel import facility on the Brisbane River at Pinkenba.

Construction of the multi-million dollar facilities began in 2008 and was completed in December 2011.

During the construction phase over 450 workers were employed and with over a quarter of a million man-hours worked without a Day Away From Work injury being recorded, safety performance was excellent.

The new bitumen facility is capable of supplying more than 240,000 tonnes of bitumen per annum and when combined with an expanded facility in Townsville gives BP the capacity to seal or pave approximately 10,000 kilometres of Queensland roads. This is an increase to BP’s bitumen supply capacity of more than 50 per cent and will help meet growing demand as the Queensland economy recovers from January’s flooding.

The new marine fuel terminal which is comprised of new storage tanks with 30,000 tonnes of storage capacity, a new dedicated barge wharf and new double-hulled bunker barge means BP is now in the unique position of being able to store and deliver three different marine fuels.

Susan Dio, BP’s Managing Director, Bulwer Island Refinery, said; “I am delighted that Premier Bligh has been able to formally inaugurate our new facilities.”

“Queensland is a hugely important state for BP. As well as manufacturing, we supply fuel for aviation, shipping, road transportation and the state’s mining and agricultural industries. This multi-million dollar investment adds to our capacity to support the state’s expanding economy.”

“Infrastructure investment is good for business and BP is proud to be playing its part in keeping Queensland moving,” she said.
