April 18, 2025 [Oil Price]- BP said on Thursday it had safely loaded the first LNG cargo for export from Phase 1 of its Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project offshore Mauritania and Senegal as the UK supermajor continues to bring major projects on stream.
First gas from the project was announced early this year.
Now, the export of the first loaded LNG cargo from the project offshore West Africa will make Mauritania and Senegal LNG-exporting nations, contributing to global LNG supply.
Phase 1 at Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) is set to produce around 2.3 million tons of LNG per year and the project is expected to produce LNG for more than 20 years, BP says.
“This first cargo from Mauritania and Senegal marks a significant new supply for global energy markets. Starting exports from GTA Phase 1 is an important step for BP and our oil and gas business as we celebrate the creation of a new production hub within our global portfolio,” said Gordon Birrell, BP’s EVP production & operations.
The LNG export project is one of BP’s key major developments, which it plans to bring online in the next two years as part of its new strategy to grow its oil and gas production.
The supermajor plans to raise its global upstream production to 2.3 – 2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent in 2030, with the capacity to increase production out to 2035.
BP has started announcing new oil and gas project start-ups as part of its plan to have 10 major projects launched worldwide between 2025 and 2027 and grow upstream production.
Earlier this month, BP said that its Cypre development offshore Trinidad and Tobago delivered first gas.
Just after teasing in February that a major strategy reset is coming, BP announced the start of production from the second development phase of the Raven field offshore Egypt. The project involves the subsea tieback of additional Raven infill wells to its existing onshore infrastructure as part of the West Nile Delta (WND) project.
