Boosting Australia’s Strategic Diesel Fuel Storage – Coogee Constructing 120ML of Bulk Diesel Storage at Kwinana to Support Australian Fuel Security

August 17, 2023 [Coogee]- Coogee is proud to announce that we are increasing Australia’s energy resilience through the construction of an additional 120ML of bulk diesel storage – taking our total fuel storage capacity in Kwinana, Western Australia to more than 240ML.

In July 2021, Coogee Kwinana was announced as a successful project for the Federal Government’s Boosting Australia’s Fuel Storage Program (BADSP) to boost Australia’s long-term fuel security. Construction of the new tanks has commenced, and is on schedule for the tanks to be commissioned and operational by June 2023.

Coogee CEO, Dr Grant Lukey advised “The investment in our new 120ML diesel storage adds to our existing strategically located fuel terminals business and makes us the largest independent fuel terminal storage and services provider in WA. Our existing facilities along with these new tanks offers the fuel majors optionality and access to a very efficient open access commingled fuel storage facility.”

“We are pleased to have leading energy company, Viva Energy Australia, come on board as our foundation customer for the tanks on an open access commingled basis,” Dr Lukey said.

Viva Energy Chief Operating and Financial Officer, Jevan Bouzo said, “We have been hosted by Coogee at their open access facility in Western Australia for more than 10 years. We look forward to continuing this relationship over the longer term and to improving energy security and supply for our customers in Western Australia with the critical fuels to keep their businesses and the state moving.”

Coogee’s Manager for Innovation and Project Development, Russell MacKenzie explained further “Coogee has a programme of continually assessing development opportunities, including this new storage facility. The Federal Government’s BADSP grant provided the necessary support required to build this strategic infrastructure.”

Diesel is a key product used across a range of sectors in Western Australia such as mining, agriculture and transport. The new 120ML of shore-based tankage will tie-in with existing wharf-lines to the Kwinana Bulk Jetty (KBJ), existing pipelines from the BP facility, as well as established road and rail gantries to provide security of supply and enhanced fuel security to these critical industries in Western Australia.

Coogee is an established independent major tank terminal services provider and has major tank terminals across Australia. We remain independent and our terminal storage and services are provided on an efficient open access, commingled model that lowers the cost of supply to the industry.
