May 21, 2025 [H2 View]- Australian clean energy developer Energy Estate has acquired the San Luis Industrial Complex (SLIC) in California for an undisclosed amount, marking its entry into the US hydrogen industry.
This site will be used to produce green hydrogen using solar power to support local industries, such as transport and agriculture. Furthermore, the project is part of Arches, California’s $12.6bn state-backed hydrogen hub initiative.
“The partnership with Archers represents a significant milestone in the pursuit of our clean industrial hub strategy in North America, building on the hubs and ecosystems we’ve been developing in Australia, New Zealand and other markets,” explained Vincent Dwyer, Co-founder and CEO of Energy Estate.
Simon Currie, Co-founder and Chief Projects Officer at the Sydney-based company, added that the investment in SLIC is “directly aligned with the digital infrastructure platform, Energy Estate Digital.”
Energy Estate has developed clean energy and hydrogen projects across the Pacific, but its move into California reflects a scaling-up strategy to plug into global hydrogen demand and infrastructure, at a time when Australia’s hydrogen industry has faced setbacks.
Over the past year, the Australian sector has grappled with delayed final investment decisions, high capital costs, infrastructure shortfalls, and policy uncertainty.
By entering a government-backed ecosystem like ARCHES, the acquisition may reflect a strategic hedge against these domestic challenges.
However, in the Trump administration’s 2026 budget proposal, a $15bn funding cut was proposed to the legislative package that includes $8bn for the seven regional clean hydrogen hubs.
Reportedly, the package was previously under review by the Department of Government Efficiency, with hubs in Democratic-leaning states, such as Arches, potentially facing cuts.
