Argentina’s YPF Begins Building Vaca Muerta Oil Pipeline

May 29, 2024 [P&GJ]- State-owned Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales (YPF) has begun constructing the first 130 km of the 600-km Vaca Muerta Sur oil pipeline in Argentina. The initial phase will run from Anelo in Neuquen to Allen in Rio Negro, connecting with the Oldelval system, Argentina’s largest oil pipeline network. This project aims to enhance the oil transportation system in the Neuquen basin, significantly boosting transport capacity to refineries and the port of Bahia Blanca.

The first segment of the pipeline is being constructed in the Loma Campana area, a joint operation by YPF and Chevron. Upon completion, the pipeline will be managed by a new consortium, akin to the Oldelval system. The pipeline is designed to transport up to 390,000 barrels per day (b/d), increasing the Neuquen basin’s oil evacuation capacity by 70% and doubling the current capacity of the Vaca Muerta area.

Phase two of the project, which includes an export terminal near Sierra Grande in Rio Negro province, is under development. Once finished, Vaca Muerta Sur will facilitate the export of 135 million barrels per year, positioning Argentina as a leading regional oil exporter. The project also involves building Argentina’s largest tank farm and two offshore floating monobuoys located 6 km from the shore.
