March 05, 2025 [Renewables Now]- Austrian plant engineering group Andritz AG said on Monday that it has received an order to build a 100-MW green hydrogen facility in Rostock, Germany, which will be connected to the country’s planned core network.U.S. refiners of heavy crude, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico, are expected to feel the hit of the license withdrawal, which is happening at the same time Trump imposes tariffs on Canada and Mexico, the top suppliers of oil to the U.S.
The plant will be built on behalf of Rostock EnergyPort cooperation GmbH (REPCO). The latter was formed in 2022 as a joint venture between energy companies RWE Generation SE, EnBW Neue Energien GmbH and RheinEnergie AG, and port operator Rostock Port GmbH to develop green hydrogen production and distribution infrastructure.
Subject to the investment decision expected in the middle of 2025, REPCO intends to give Andritz the notice to proceed with the supply of the 100-MW plant.
The Austrian company acting as an EPC contractor will build the facility using HydrogenPro pressurised alkaline technology for the electrolysis process.
Andritz will be also responsible for the engineering and the construction of offsites and utilities, hydrogen purification and compression systems, storage facilities and a hydrogen filling station. Commissioning is scheduled for 2027.
The hydrogen plant will be connected to Germany’s core hydrogen network, which will play a role in the transportation of hydrogen across European countries. The plant will also supply local industries and the mobility sector, backing Germany’s decarbonisation goals.
The electrolyser is the core of the HyTechHafen Rostock project which was allocated a grant of EUR 199 million (USD 207.2m) in funding from the federal government and some federal states under the IPCEI Hy2Infra programme.
According to RWE’s website, the 100-MW facility is expected to generate up to 6,500 tonnes of hydrogen annually.
Andritz was previously also commissioned to build another 100-MW electrolysis plant in Germany, which will be used by steel maker Salzgitter AG to decarbonise its steel production.
