Algol Chemicals is centralising its storage tank operations in Finland at the Port of Turku. The company has leased additional land at the Port of Turku’s Western Quay and equipped the area in accordance with the industry’s latest technical solutions and safety norms. The area now offers a wide range of possibilities for storing, handling and packing chemicals. Environmental certification has also been granted for these operations.

“The aim of the project is to further enhance the safety of operations and the services we provide to industries that use chemicals,” says Markku Ormanto, head of operations at the storage tank area. According to him, the planning work focused on the efficiency of processes, the safety of operations, and environmental aspects. The modernised storage tank area represents a pilot project within the Algol Group. Accordingly, the principles of sustainable development will be applied when monitoring operations and for making ongoing improvements.

The size of the storage tank area is approximately 8000 square metres, and there are currently around 30 individual storage tanks. At the site Algol Chemicals stores and processes water solutions of liquid chemicals. Operations comply with ISO standard norms as required by quality and environmental certification, and they are monitored by the Safety Technology Authority Tukes.

The technical systems for the tanks and the equipment at the site represent the latest technology. The modernisation project also focused on the condition of the facilities and roofs, on HVAC technology and transportation corridors in the area.
