May 12, 2025 [Renewables Now]- Alder Renewables and Bioenergie AE Cote-Nord have agreed to pool their expertise to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from forest residuals in Port-Cartier, Quebec, eyeing production launch in 2027.
The initiative, dubbed Project Avance, will utilise Alder Renewables’ proprietary technology to convert the bio-oil currently produced at the Port-Cartier Bioenergie AECN plant, a joint venture between sawmill operator Arbec Forest Products and integrated forestry operations company Groupe Remabec.
Under the partnership, the existing Port-Cartier plant will be adapted to produce the low-carbon Alder Renewable Crude (ARC), which will then be refined into SAF and other low-carbon transportation fuels.
The project is described as one of the first biomass-to-SAF production facilities in North America. The team is currently seeking additional support from both the Canadian federal and Quebec provincial governments. They aim to establish the site as an innovation hub for SAF development, including testing and certification capabilities for other renewable fuel technologies.
“By converting underutilised and sustainably sourced forest residuals into high-value renewable fuels, we are creating a solution that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel,” said Alder Renewables’ CCO Darren Fuller.
Project Avance aligns with Canada’s Aviation Action Plan, which targets 1 billion litres of SAF by 2030.
