Alberta Teams Up With Enbridge to Boost Pipeline Capacity

January 07, 2025 [Oil Price]- Alberta’s government has partnered with energy infrastructure major Enbridge to boost the province’s pipeline capacity, focusing on reducing red tape for pipeline construction.

The partnership is part of the Alberta government’s plan for boosting oil and gas production.

“It’s the perfect time to be doing this,” Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said, as quoted by CityNews. “I think with the change in administration in the U.S….one of our tasks in Alberta is to make them understand, for them to achieve global energy dominance, they need a partner to help them ensure they have product for their own people.”

With regard to the financing of these pipeline infrastructure expansion plans, the provincial government will not be reaching for tax dollars but would rather use income from oil and gas paid in-kind by producers to the province, local media reported.

Alberta accounts for the overwhelming bulk of Canadian oil exports, sending crude at a rate of 4.3 million barrels daily to the United States, according to Smith. The Alberta Premier has made no secret of her plans to increase that further.

“I know the Americans have increased production pretty dramatically in the last 10 years, but it might not always be that way,” Smith said back in November when reports emerged it was discussing further pipeline capacity expansion with energy infrastructure companies. “They need to know that if they’re looking for additional supply, they shouldn’t be looking to Iran or Venezuela. They should be looking to their friend up north.”

In the context of these plans, Albertans were not happy when the now-defunct Trudeau government announced plans to slap emission caps on the oil and gas industry. Those caps, oil and gas producers argued, would effectively mean a cap on production reducing the supply of essential energy commodities. The Business Council of Canada said, “At a time when Canada’s economy is stalling, imposing an oil and gas emissions cap will only make Canadians poorer.”
