July 31, 2026 [Reuters] – U.S. shale ethane exports to China hit a record ~5 million tons in H1 2026 (up 88% YoY), with propane at 5.77 million tons and butane more than doubling, supplying critical feedstocks for Chinese petrochemical crackers.

These natural gas liquids are converted into ethylene for plastics, packaging, fibers and chemicals, effectively powering the factories Washington seeks to compete with.

The pattern reveals a complementary division of labor: America extracts and exports raw molecules while China captures higher-value manufacturing, jobs and technology further downstream.

Middle East supply disruptions are likely to deepen Chinese reliance on reliable U.S. energy inputs rather than accelerate decoupling.

This creates a policy dilemma—exports support U.S. producers and the trade balance, yet every cargo strengthens the industrial base America is trying to challenge.
