July 30, 2026 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- Stabilis has reached a key regulatory milestone for its proposed Galveston LNG Facility after receiving a Letter of Recommendation (LOR) from the US Coast Guard following a formal review of the project.

The recommendation, issued by the US Coast Guard’s Captain of the Port, was provided to the Port of Galveston and the Galveston Fire Marshal after an extensive safety and security assessment of the proposed facility and its associated waterfront LNG loading, marine transportation and LNG bunkering operations.

The review included a detailed evaluation of potential navigation hazards, vessel traffic impacts, emergency response capabilities, maritime security risks and the effectiveness of proposed mitigation measures. The positive recommendation confirms that the project has successfully completed an important stage in the regulatory approval process.

The proposed Galveston LNG Facility is expected to support the growing demand for liquefied natural gas as a marine fuel, expanding LNG bunkering infrastructure in one of the busiest maritime regions on the US Gulf Coast.

According to Stabilis, the facility is scheduled to begin operations in the third quarter of 2028. The project will also include the introduction of the first purpose-built, dedicated Jones Act-compliant LNG bunker barge to serve the Galveston and Houston market, strengthening the region’s LNG bunkering capabilities and supporting the maritime industry’s transition to lower-emission fuels.

The latest approval represents a significant step forward for the development, bringing the project closer to construction and commercial operation while reinforcing the role of LNG infrastructure in supporting cleaner marine transportation across the US Gulf Coast.
