UK Offers GBP 43m for Green Aviation Projects

January 22, 2026 [Renewables Now]- The UK Department for Transport on Tuesday announced up to GBP 43 million (EUR 49.5m/USD 59m) in funding that will be allocated to green aviation projects aimed at helping achieve net zero aviation by 2050.

UK businesses, researchers and universities will be able to bid for the funding from February. The investment will support research and development projects to develop technologies such as clean fuels and zero-emission aircraft, and could also fund trials to explore ways to avoid contrails, which can contribute to global warming.

“Zero emission aircraft, hydrogen fuels and other emerging technologies are vital to reduce the climate impacts from flying and will enable us to deliver our airport expansion plans to boost connectivity and grow the economy,” said Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander.

The government also said that the Civil Aviation Authority will develop regulations needed for the use of hydrogen fuel.

Later this year, the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Bill will come into force.
