Spanish Oil Refineries Shut Down After Power Blackout

April 30, 2025 [Reuters]- Several Spanish oil refineries, including both plants run by Spain’s second largest refinery operator Moeve, were shut down on Monday after a widespread power outage hit Spain and Portugal.

A spokesperson for Moeve, which is owned by Abu Dhabi fund Mubadala and U.S.-based private equity firm the Carlyle Group, said it had halted operations at both its refineries.

Earlier on Monday, Petronor, a majority owned subsidiary of Repsol, said it had shut all units at its Bilbao oil refinery due to the power blackout in the country.

Spain’s biggest refinery operator Repsol did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment.

The power outage that hit Spain and Portugal on Monday paralysed public transport, caused large traffic jams and delayed flights. Its cause has yet to be confirmed.
