UK Waste to Energy, Hydrogen, Carbon Capture Plans Approved

March 21, 2025 [H2 View]- The North Lincolnshire Green Energy Park (NLGEP) secured a Development Consent Order (DCO) for its plans to process up to 760,000 tonnes of waste per year to generate 95MWe of electricity, which will be used to power electrolysis and homes in the area.

Hydrogen will be produced by a 10MW electrolyser system using water from the waste condensate collected from the CO2 capture.

The developers intend to set up a hydrogen refuelling station at the site, as well as potentially supplying the energy carrier for industrial processes or gas grid blending.

The up to 650,000 tonnes of CO2 per year produced by the waste incineration process is planned to be captured and linked into the proposed Humber Carbon Capture Pipeline for storage in the North Sea.

Some of the CO2 will also be used in the recycling of bottom ash and fly ash from the incineration process to produce concrete.

Additionally, the site will host a plastic recycling facility which will sort plastics from the commercial and domestic waste supplied to the plant for processing and reuse in new products.

With the DCO secured, developers anticipate work commencing on the site in 2026 before becoming operational in 2030.

“With the DCO in place, the next steps will focus on advancing discussions with engineering and construction contractors, finalising funding partners and formalising the waste contracts to bring the project to life,” said Colin Hammond from NLGEP.
