BP to Revise Plan for Aussie Clean Fuel Projects - Report

February 06, 2025 [Renewables Now]- Oil and gas major BP Plc has decided to revise plans for clean fuel and hydrogen production at its former oil refinery in Western Australia.

“While bioenergy remains a core part of BP’s strategy, BP has decided to re-phase the Kwinana renewable fuels project,” the company has said, as quoted by Bloomberg.

BP has undertaken job slashes and suspended 30 projects since June as part of its efforts to cut costs and improve returns, according to a memo to employees seen by the news agency.

The original Kwinana Energy Hub plan revolves around two clean fuel sites, Kwinana Renewable Fuels and H2Kwinana.

Kwinana Renewable Fuels is designed to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), also known as renewable diesel, from a new biorefinery. H2Kwinana, in turn, targets green hydrogen production to support domestic and export demand, including decarbonising the British firm’s site operations.

The project envisages the integration of the planned biorefinery and green hydrogen production facilities with the company’s operating import terminal and the optimisation of existing site assets.

BP launched the front-end engineering and design (FEED) phase for green hydrogen production at the Kwinana Energy Hub in November 2023.

The Kwinana Energy Hub is located in Kwinana, Western Australia. It was established in 1955 and operated as a fuel refinery until early 2021.
