New Tankpit for Heated Products Under Construction at Chane Terminal Le Havre

December 06, 2024 [Chane]- “If you want to grow, you have to move forward”, says Lucia Cantero Martinez, Commercial Engineer at Chane Terminal Le Havre. That’s why the terminal in Normandy, France is currently constructing a new tankpit, Tankpit 23, dedicated to heated products.

“We saw rising demand from customers so we decided to open Tankpit 22 in 2021, and now we are constructing its sister”, Lucia explains. “The great thing about this new tankpit is that it will be heated with green steam, produced by reusing local waste.” The green steam is generated by converting local waste into energy through a specific process (e.g. waste-to-energy technology), ensuring a circular and low-emission heating solution. Using green steam reduces emissions related to heating processes at Chane, helping clients lower their Scope 3 carbon footprint.

“We don’t just handle the storage, we are involved in the entire procedure. We want our clients to feel like we are an extension of their own organisation”

Optimising the entire chain

The new 20,000 cbm tankpit is an example of how the Chane team in Le Havre always try to proactively think with their customers: “We don’t just handle the storage, we are involved in the entire procedure. We want our clients to feel like we are an extension of their own organisation. Our main focus in the commercial department is understanding our customers’ wants and needs in order to offer the best solutions. We want to help optimise their entire logistics chain.” In addition to benefiting Chane’s clients, this innovation also reduces Chane’s operational emissions, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable operations.

Flexibility is an important part of that, Lucia says: “We have clients that can change their products several times per year within the same tank. We’re able to add value to their logistics with our internal process and assets, which allow us to store a large portfolio of products and offer ancillary services. Such flexibility is quite rare in the storage industry, and it’s one of our strengths at Chane Terminal Le Havre.”

Operational in 2025

“We are really eager to understand our customers’ full logistic operations and to answer their needs”, Lucia adds. Tankpit 23 is the next step in that mission: “It’s our top project at the moment and we’re very happy that construction is moving totally on schedule.” Tankpit 23 in Le Havre is scheduled for operation in two stages in 2025, with the first half becoming operational in the first quarter.
