November 27, 2024 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. and Konoike Transport Co., Ltd. have announced a collaboration to advance the city gas distribution business in India. This project is being jointly developed with I Squared Capital, AG&P Group, Sumitomo Corporation, and Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport & Urban Development (JOIN). Konoike Transport’s participation, achieved through the transfer of equity from Osaka Gas Singapore Pte. Ltd. , is expected to boost gas sales in mobility, residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
The partnership aims to accelerate the development of compressed natural gas stations and gas distribution networks in India, leveraging Konoike Transport’s experience in gas distribution and logistics. The company has an extensive track record of collaboration with Osaka Gas in LNG regasification, transportation, and gas equipment maintenance, along with 16 years of experience in India’s growing sectors, including rail, medical services, and steel processing.
Osaka Gas has previously made two investments in the CGD sector in India, providing technical and sales support based on its domestic expertise. The project encompasses operations in southern India’s AG&P areas and north-central India’s Think Gas territories, covering a combined 320,000 km².
This initiative aligns with the Indian government’s strategy to expand natural gas usage, promote CNG vehicles, and establish extensive gas networks to meet rising energy demand while addressing carbon emissions and air pollution. Operators in the CGD sector are granted exclusive rights for gas sales and infrastructure in designated areas through a competitive bidding process.
