Open Season For CHANE Rotterdam Ammonia Import Terminal Development
11.20.2024 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

November 20, 2024 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- Chane has announced the next phase of decision-making in its plans for a new clean ammonia storage facility in Rotterdam, marking a pivotal step after three years of technical preparation.

The initiative, referred to as “open season,” invites interested parties to collaborate on this ambitious project, which aims to meet growing European demand for low-carbon energy solutions.

Tamme Mekkes, business development director at Chane, explained: “Now is the time for interested parties to join us in realising this development and seize the opportunity to grow in this emerging market.”

Ammonia, recognised as a key player in the energy transition, serves as both a low-carbon fuel and a hydrogen carrier. The terminal under consideration would expand Chane’s Rotterdam Nieuwe Maas terminal, offering several hundred thousand cubic metres of ammonia storage and multimodal transport capabilities. These include access for large vessels, river barges, coasters, trains, and pipelines, ensuring seamless distribution across Europe.

“We’re seeing significant interest in the ammonia import market,” said Irgen Iversen, business development manager at Chane. “This is a critical time for companies to act, as we still have some space available for prospective clients to sign reservation agreements and move forward with their plans.”

The proposed terminal would also explore advanced ammonia services, such as onsite cracking facilities and a potential distribution terminal in Duisburg, Germany.

Ammonia import has evolved from a hot topic into a maturing market, according to Mekkes. “The visions of recent years are becoming tangible as the market matures. Companies that want to play a role in this growing sector are making their moves now.”

Pending an investment decision slated for 2026, Chane anticipates launching the new terminal by late 2029 or early 2030.
