October 14, 2024 [Renewables Now]- Construction work has started on the government-backed, 10-MW Hydrogen Park Murray Valley plant in the state of Victoria, the local ministry for climate change and energy announced today.

Located in the city of Wodonga, the AUD-65.4-million (USD 43.9m/EUR 40.1m) project led by Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) is expected to produce 500 tonnes of hydrogen annually for injection into the local gas network at blends of up to 10% and potential future use at transport refuelling stations.

The site’s electrolyser, which will be provided by LONGi Group, will have eight times the capacity of the largest electrolyser currently operating in the country. It will utilise the recycled water from North East Water’s Wodonga Wastewater Treatment Plant.

“Producing renewable hydrogen on this scale has never been done in Australia before, so this project is blazing a trail to scale up green hydrogen production, and that’s why we’re backing it,” said Chris Bowen, minister for climate change and energy.

The Hydrogen Park Murray Valley project enjoys strong financial support from the state, including AUD 36.1 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency and AUD 12.3 million from the Victorian Government with additional financing of AUD 3.22 million provided by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation through the Advancing Hydrogen Fund.

“The Albanese Labor Government is investing to ensure Australia can reach its potential as a renewable energy superpower, with the AUD-4-billion Hydrogen Headstart program and a AUD 2 per kilogram hydrogen production tax incentive to scale up development of Australia’s renewable hydrogen industry,” Josh Wilson, assistant minister for climate change and energy.
