September 19, 2024 [SolarQuarter]- Jordan Green Ammonia LLC (JGA), a prominent player in the renewable energy sector, has signed Land Use Agreements with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) and the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC). This milestone marks the beginning of the next phase for developing a green ammonia production facility, which will include a photovoltaic farm and an ammonia production installation.

The agreements solidify JGA’s commitment to establishing a cutting-edge facility focused on producing green hydrogen and green ammonia using renewable energy sources. This initiative supports Jordan’s vision of fostering a low-carbon economy and enhancing the nation’s renewable energy capabilities. By leveraging Jordan’s abundant solar resources, the project is expected to play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable industrial development globally.

The formal signing took place with Dr. Wael Suleiman, Chairman of the Board of JGA; Ramzi Kabariti, Commissioner for Youth and Entrepreneurship at ASEZA; and H.E. Hussein Al-Safadi, CEO of ADC.

Dr. Wael Suleiman remarked, “This agreement marks a significant advancement in Jordan’s renewable energy landscape. Our collaboration with ASEZA and ADC will elevate Jordan to a leading position in green hydrogen and ammonia production, driving economic growth and meeting the global demand for clean energy solutions.”

The agreements reflect a strategic partnership between Jordan Green Ammonia and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, representing the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. This development follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and JGA in October 2023.

Under the terms, JGA has been granted the necessary facilities within the Aqaba Special Economic Zone to conduct feasibility studies and proceed with the project’s implementation.

The project aims to produce between 100,000 and 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. It will utilize modern technologies, including electrolysis powered by renewable energy, seawater desalination, and advanced energy storage systems. The goal is to develop an off-grid, self-sustained energy system to power the ammonia plant with minimal environmental impact and optimal energy efficiency.

Dr. Marlena Krohn, Vice-Chairman of the Board of JGA, emphasized, “Our green ammonia production approach is groundbreaking. By integrating solar energy with advanced battery storage and hydrogen compression systems, we aim to revolutionize the production process, making it both sustainable and scalable.”

Having completed the Technical Report and Pre-feasibility Study, and with the Environmental Impact Assessment conducted by Dar Al-Handasah, JGA is set to carry out comprehensive feasibility studies and finalize engineering designs over the next few months. The project will be executed in stages, starting with site assessments and progressing to construction, with full operation projected in five years.

This partnership underscores Jordan’s dedication to innovation and sustainability, highlighting its increasing role in the global green energy transition. By 2029, the Jordan Green Ammonia facility is expected to make a significant impact on both local and international clean energy markets, providing environmentally friendly solutions for industrial and energy needs.
